Manomet Ice Cream!
Kush Kone - 733 State Road. We usually walk up after dinner - a short, fun expedition that you and your family will enjoy. Head south on Manomet Avenue from the cottage. Turn right on Strand Avenue. Walk up Strand Avenue until you get to State Road. Kush Kone is across the street in front of you. Cross the street carefully! :) Enjoy soft-serve ice cream, hard ice cream, sundaes, floats, frappes, and more. The only problem is choosing a flavor! Kush Kone Facebook
Gellars Snack Bar - 506 State Rd. This is a five minute drive from the cottage. They have ice cream and a full snack bar menu lunch/dinner menu. In addition to ice cream you can get an easy take-out meal here, including fried fish and fried clams, other local sea foods, tuna melts, etc. A part of Manomet for over 91 years! Gellars
Lobstahs at the cottage!
Lobsters go with the New England coast like peanut butter goes with jelly. (And are even tastier.) We have two large lobster pots (the dark ones with speckles) in the panty cabinet below the microwave. Hot tip: The dark pots usually come to a boil faster than the stainless steel ones, so even if you just have a few lobsters using the larger dark lobster pots is usually faster to boil.
Some good local sources for lobsters - you can call for pricing before you go:
Market Basket at 1 Commerce Way, north of the cottage. About a 15 min drive to a large full service grocery with a fully stocked seafood counter live and cooked lobsters and other fresh seafood. You'll usually find the best prices on lobsters here, and if you have to make a grocery run you can combine that w/your lobster acquisition. (774) 404-7518
Rock Bottom Seafood at 2234 State Road south of Manomet in Cedarville. If you happend to be down south of the cottage this is a good place for lobsters and seafood, and they also have a lunch/dinner menu if you'd like to get takeout or eat-in casual. Rock Bottom Seafood. 508-888-6678
The Lobster Pound at 252 Manomet Point Road. Unfortunately, the Lobster Pound appears to have closed. In a picturesque spot at the end of Manomet Point, the Lobster Pound is a long tradition at Manomet. Live and steamed lobsters, as well as many other fresh seafood choices, pre-made lobster rolls, stuff qahogs, etc. The Lobster Pound. (508) 224-5700
Cooking lobsters:
You can purchase your lobsters several hours before you cook them. They will be happiest kept in the bag they come in, resting in a cool place, like a cooler, or the bottom of shelf of the refrigerator (make sure the bags don't leak and are tied at the top so they'll stay in the bag!). You can also put them into the freezer for 2-3 minutes to cool them down a little if it's a hot day.
Hot tip - purchase a couple extra lobsters and cook them that night, and then use them to make lobster rolls at the cottage the next day. Lobster rolls at the beach are a wonderful thing. Usually 1 to 2 lobster rolls per lobster, depending on lobster size and the season. Recently moulted lobsters have less meat, ones that are pre-moult have more, given the same shell size. More on lobster moulting.
Lobster roll ingredients: Lobster chunks, mayonnaise, maybe a little salt if you want, resting in a top-split hot dog bun. Yes!
Cooking:
Cover the pot to bring enough water to boil to cover the lobsters you are going to cook. You don't need them six inches under water, just enough to cover them by an inch or so is sufficient. Remember that when you add lobsters to the pot, the level of the water in the pot will increase, so don't fill the pot up to the top before adding lobsters.
Safety: When it's time to put the lobsters into the pot, we shoo all kids out of the kitchen so that they are away from the open pot of boiling water.
When the water is boiling grab the lobters one-by-one by a claw and slide them into the water in a smooth moderately fast motion. Don't pause or pull back. Be careful that the lobster doesn't flick some of the hot water on you or others w/its tail.
Cover the pot and let it come back to a boil. For ~1lb lobsters (our favorite size) we usually leave them in the pot for a total of approximately 18-20 minutes after putting them into the pot and putting the lid back on top.
Lobster shell crackers and lobster picks are in the dish panty in the dining room.
Have an empty pot on the table for shells
Melt butter and enjoy!
