General Info
Why do I need a key to go to the beach?
The beaches at Manomet are private. We are part of an association of local home owners formed by one of our forebears that provides us access parts of the beach via a set of stairs down the bluffs.
Access to the beach is through a locked gate just down the street. You'll need a key to open that gate to get down to the beach.
You do not need to have a key to open the gate from the inside to leave the beach. :)
How do I get to the beach?
First, get a beach key! Take a beach key from the wall next to the front door. You need that to open the gate to the steps down to the beach.
Take a short walk: Walk south on Manomet Ave from the cottage. Between Simes Road and Strand Ave you'll find a gate on your left at the top of the bluffs. It's to the right of a small cottage and surrouded by some trees. The stairs there lead down to the beach. Use your key to open the gate. Please close the gate before you start down the stairs.
A key is not required to leave the beach The gate opens w/out a key from the inside, so you can exit the beach whenever you want. Our family Key Rule: If you're going to be coming back down, take a key from the group on the beach up with you. If you're not coming back to the beach, leave the beach key w/the group on the beach. Last one(s) up - make sure you have the key! :)
Don't lock the beach gate deadbolt. If you turn the key the wrong way it will lock the gate deadbolt and individuals on the beach will need a key to exit. Turn the key to the left to open the gate.
Return the beach key! Please ensure you put the beach keys back on the hooks by the door in the cottage when you return from the beach! We all need to make sure that each renter has enough keys to access the beach in different groups of their family.
We forgot our beach toys - are there any at the cottage?
We've got you covered - we have beach stuff!
There is a plastic tub on the back of the cottage w/beach toys, a couple floating noodles, and other fun beach-related items. Feel free to use any of the beach items on the back porch. Put them back into the tub or in the area on the back of the porch where they are stored when you are done.
Please ensure you supervise small children when getting beach items from the back porch.
Are there any important beach rules?
We're very glad you asked! :) Yes, there are.
Where can check the tides?
You can find a Manomet tide chart here.
We also have a tide clock on the wall next to the chaise lounge chair in the living room.
How do I use the Roku TV?
We have recently added a "big screen" (wow - 32"!!) TV to the cottage for your viewing pleasure. A big update for us, given our previous TV was a small CRT.
Why does the TV ask me to set a "sign-out" date?
The first time you turn on the TV it will ask you to set a date when you will be automatically signed out of any streaming services (Netflix, Hulu, etc.) you may decide to use on the TV while you're at the cottage. Normally you would choose your departure day as your sign-out day. You can choose any day you want.
Use the TV to watch whatever content you want, live TV, or use your Netflix or Hulu account, etc. Then at noon on the day you chose you will be automatically signed out of any streaming services you may signed into.
You can also sign out manually from the TV's Home screen. Here's a PDF that shows how to set your sign-out date when you turn on the TV at the start of your visit: Roku TV first-use Guest Sign-out setup
You can find more about using the Roku TV Guest mode here if you are interested: Using a Roku TV with Guest Mode
Can I watch regular live TV?
Yes - choose the "Live TV" icon from the Roku TV menu. While watching live TV, press the Left navigation button on the Roku remote to see the onscreen guide for the TV channels.
Can I watch Netflix and other streaming services, and rent movies if I want to?
Yes. The Roku TV in the living room has been set up in "Guest Mode" so you can safely sign into any streaming services you want to use on the TV. You can add additional channels if you want to.
Can I stream content from my phone or computer?
iPhone/iMac: You can use Apple Airplay to stream content from your iPhone or iMac to the TV. We've tested this and it seemed to work well.
Android: Some Android devices can use screen mirroring to send content to the TV. but we have found that feature to be somewhat unreliable.
The TV does not natively support Chromecast
There is an HDMI cable attached to the TV - you can use that to connect any devices that support HDMI to the TV.
Are there board games or puzzles at the cottage?
Yes - look in the closet in the living room, the one next to the dining room. You'll find games, toys, puzzles, and other fun diversions.
I need some help w/the BBQ
The BBQ is for guest use and is great for a grilled dinner, whether surf, turf, or veggies. You'll find an "instant-read" thermometer in the kitchen drawer next to the refrigerator. You can use that to check internal temps of your food while you're grilling.
Cleaning:
There is a brush you can use to remove any build-up on the grates.
Check the grates for any debris before putting food on them
Lighting:
The BBQ's built in lighting (the loud click when you turn on each burner) may not work consistently. You will find butane lighters in the kitchen (on the wall behind the counter next to the water heater), and on the fireplace mantel. You can use those to light the grill.
Do not turn on a burner until you have the butane lighter in your hand and are ready to light the burner.
Never leave the BBQ w/a burner on that isn't lit.
Things to check if the grill won't work/light:
Make sure that the gas is turned on at the propane tank
Check the pressure gauge on the tank to confirm that it is not empty or almost out. We check the tank during the summer but in some cases guests may use it extensively and it might need to be refilled.
If the propane tank needs to be refilled. You can exchange the tank using the Blue Rhino propane tank exchange service at the Al Prime Gas Station at 724 State Road, 774-283-4091. Just a half-mile from the cottage in downtown Manomet.
Contact us to let us know you had to refill or exchange the tank, and we will reimburse you for the expenses and trouble you incurred.
Make sure you securely attach the new tank to the grill before using it.
Never allow children to be near the grill unattended or to use it.
An adult should always be with the BBQ while you are using it. Don't leave it running unattended.
When you're done grilling, make sure you turn off all of the burners on the grill.
Trash and Recycling Info and Schedule
We have trash and recycling bins on the north side of the cottage for your convenience.
On pickup days please roll out the bin(s) so they are are on the lawn between the bluberry bush and the cedar tree next to the driveway:
Trash: The trash bin should be taken out every Tuesday night, for Wednesday AM pickup.
Recycling: The two blue recycling bins should taken out every other Wednsday night for Thursday pickup. The recycle schedule is posted on the refrigerator.
Do you have any information on the history of Manomet?
The Manomet Village Center Master Plan Update has some interesting information on the history of Manomet - see the History section starting on page 9. The information includes a discussion of likely origins of the name Manomet, coming from Wampanoag Native Americans who lived in the area.
Take a look at the "Manomet History - Postcards and Photos" album on our Photos page for historical pictures of Manomet and surrounding areas. One of our family members has shared scans of postcards sent by Manomet vacationers dating back to the early 1900's.

The web site plymouth.wickedlocal.com has a lot information about the local Plymouth community.
What is the Manomet organization?
The Manomet Bird Observatory was founded on Stage Point in 1969. Its initial mission was "...long-term studies of birds and other aspects of southeastern Massachusetts’ natural history and ecology." and includind the first bird banding lab on the east coast of North America.
Now known as simply Manomet, the organization has broadened its mission and scope of activities. "Manomet uses science and collaboration to strengthen bird migration routes, coastal ecosystems, and working lands and seas across the Western Hemisphere."
Located on Stage Point Road about 1/2 mile from the cottage, the Manomet organization is housed in a large building that was a home to early residents of Manomet. The organization still completes spring and fall tagging programs for local bird populations to monitor their health and activities.
Their web site indicates that they are planning to launch an interpretive nature trail on their property in 2021 that will be open to the public. Visit their site at Manomet.org for more information about this excellent organization.
